alliance theory Generally associated with the structuralist anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss, the theory argues that in kinship systems, inheritance and the continuation of the vertical line (descent) is less important than the horizontal links (alliances) and relationships of reciprocity and exchange which are brought about by marriage between different groups.
