Starred at New York City Opera for nearly 30 years, making debut as the Shepherd in Tosca (1948); created roles in several contemporary works, including Augusta Tabor in Douglas Moore's Ballad of Baby Doe (1956) and Elizabeth Proctor in Robert Ward's Crucible (1961); also sang in the premiere of Dybbuk.
