Brownstein, Carrie (1974–)

American musician. Name variations: Sleater-Kinney. Born Sept 27, 1974, in Seattle, Washington; graduate of Evergreen State College, Olympia.

Lead singer and guitarist, was part of the band Excuse 17 (early 1990s) and performed on albums Excuse Seventeen (1995) and Such Friends Are Dangerous (1995); with Corin Tucker and drummer Lora McFarlane, formed alternative rock and punk group, Sleater-Kinney, releasing debut album, Sleater-Kinney (1995), which addressed sexism and sexual abuse; with group, released Call the Doctor (1996), which included the song, "I Wanna be Your Joey Ramone," and was voted best album of the year; also released All Hands on the Bad One (2000), which included "The Ballad of a Ladyman"; with group, appeared on Go-Betweens album, The Friends of Rachel Worth (2000). Other acclaimed albums include Dig Me Out (1997) and The Hot Rock (1999).
