Brazilian novelist and short-story writer. Name variations: Sônia Valquíria de Sousa Coutinho; Sonia Coutinho. Born 1939 in Itabuna, Bahia, Brazil.
Studied art history in Madrid and worked as journalist and translator; participated in writing programs in US; awarded Prêmio Jabuti (1976); works include Do heróis inutil (1966), Os venenos de Lucrécia (1978), O jogo de Ifá (1980), Atire em Sofia (1989), and the study of detective novels by women, Rainhas do crime: ótica feminina no romance policial (1994).
