Established the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children (1875), Canada's 1st children's hospital, and the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children's Training School for Nurses (1886); after newspaper owner John Ross Robertson donated funds to build a larger home for the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children (1883), became the 1st superintendent of the new building.
