Was a teacher in Coventry; was a member of Warwick District Council (1979–91), serving as leader of the Labour group for 7 years; representing Labour, elected to House of Commons for Birmingham Yardley (1992); appointed Opposition whip (1994) and Opposition Spokesperson on Education and Employment (1995); was School Standards minister at Department for Education and Employment (1997–98); promoted to minister of State (1998); was secretary of state of Education (2001–02); became Arts minister (2003) and voted minister of the year (2003); left Parliament (2005).
