Ambrosius, Johanna (b. 1854)

German poet. Born at Lengwethen, a parish village in East Prussia, on August 3, 1854; death date unknown; daughter of an artisan; married a peasant's son by the name of Voigt, 1874.

Johanna Ambrosius led the life of a peasant woman until she began to write verse in middle age. Her work became known when she started submitting poems to a German weekly and attracted the attention of Dr. Schrattenthal, who collected her verses and published them in one volume. The book went through 26 editions. This initial success led to the publication of other poems and stories that were also extremely popular.
