Bulgarian royal. Born in 1865; died in 1951; married Alexander I, prince of Bulgaria (r. 1879–1886), on February 6, 1889.
Alexander of Battenberg was elected prince of Bulgaria as Alexander I on April 29, 1879, but he was soon embroiled in a conflict with the Bulgarian national assembly (Sobranye). He modified the constitution and appointed a Russian-led ministry. Under pressure, he revoked his modification. Eventually, Alexander was forced to abdicate in 1886. In 1883, his intended had been Princess Victoria (1866–1929), granddaughter of the German emperor Wilhelm I, but the union was bitterly opposed by Bismarck. In 1889, he married Joanna Loisinger.
