Marianne Timmer of the Netherlands took the gold medal. Witty was expected to medal in the 1000 meters, having come into the Olympics as the world-record holder with a time of 1:15.43, but Timmer, a good friend of Witty's, also took the gold in that event at 1:16.51. Witty finished second at 1:16.75 for the silver. Catriona Le May-Doan won the bronze.
