Glossop, Peter

Glossop, Peter, English baritone; b. Sheffield, July 6, 1928. He was a student of Mosley, Rich, and Hislop. In 1952 he joined the chorus of the Sadler’s Wells Opera in London, where he then was a principal member of the company (1953-62). In 1961 he won the Sofia Competition and made his debut at London’s Covent Garden as Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, appearing there regularly until 1966. On Aug. 18, 1967, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Rigoletto during the company’s visit to Newport, R.I. His formal debut at the Metropolitan Opera in N.Y. took place as Scarpia on June 5, 1971. He also sang with other opera houses in Europe and North America. Among his other roles were Nabucco, lago, Simone Boccanegra, Falstaff, Wozzeck, and Billy Budd.
