Langendorff, Frieda

Langendorff, Frieda, German contralto; b. Breslau, March 24, 1868; d. N.Y., June 11, 1947.She was a student of J. Meyer, M. Mallinger, and A. Iffert. In 1901 she made her operatic debut in Strasbourg. After appearing at Bayreuth (1904), she sang at the German Theatre in Prague (1905–07). On Dec. 7, 1907, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Ortrud, remaining on its roster until 1908, and returning in 1910-11. After singing at the Berlin Kroll Opera (1909–11), she gave concerts in the U.S. (1912–13). From 1914 to 1916 she was a member of the Dresden Court Opera. Among her best roles were Dalila, Azucena, Amneris, and Fricka.
