As a member of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats, elected to 4th and 5th European Parliament (1994–99, 1999–2004); named vice-chair of Committee on Fisheries; founder and member of the board of AMRIE (Alliance of Maritime Regional Interests in Europe). Awarded Federal Cross of Merit.
