SIDELIGHTS:
Michael J. Barnsley is an expert in remote sensing and Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Remote sensing and GIS can be used from aircraft or satellites in space, and are computer-based systems for working with mapping data. Barnsley's specialized interests include the use of these systems to map the land-use of urban areas, and to track the loss of habitat for threatened plant species in coastal environments. His knowledge of these technologies has led Barnsley to lecture at various universities and to participate in projects with government organizations, such as the British National Space Centre and the United Kingdom UNESCO Sustainable Development Sector Committee.
Barnsley has contributed to many professional journals and has written several chapters in scientific books. He is the sole author of Environmental Modeling: A Practical Introduction, published in 2007. This book, which includes a CD-ROM, is intended for undergraduate and graduate students of the environmental sciences. It discusses the ways of working with GIS and remote sensing, how to conceptually express environmental problems, how to change conceptual models into mathematical expressions, and how to take those expressions and create a program that can be run on a computer. The accompanying CD-ROM provides all software and data needed to work through the material contained in the book.
