OBITUARY NOTICE—

See index for CA sketch: Born August 4, 1930, in New York, NY; died of pancreatic cancer June 18, 2004, in New York, NY. Critic and author. Britchky was an influential food critic specializing in New York City restaurants. A graduate of Syracuse University, where he earned an A.B. in 1950, he spent his early career in marketing. He gave up the business world in 1971 to start his own newsletter, The Restaurant Reporter, despite having no previous experience as a chef or food critic. Nevertheless, Britchky's strong writing skills made the newsletter popular until he ceased publishing it in 1976. Britchky then published the book The Restaurants of New York, which came out in regular editions from 1974 through 1991; he also started a second newsletter, Seymour Britchky's Restaurant Letter, which he ran from 1980 through 1991. His last book, written with André Soltner, was The Lutèce Cookbook (1995).
