Sidelights
An award winning, self-taught children's book illustrator, Margie Moore developed a deep interest in both art and nature while growing up near the New Jersey shore. Using her signature pen-and-ink and watercolor style, Moore creates images that often incorporate childhood memories and reflect the influences of favorite illustrators such as Beatrix Potter and Nancy Tafuri. Her work
has appeared in books such as Hope Vestergaard's Hillside Lullaby, Joanne Ryder's Bear of My Heart, and Susan Hill's easy-reader series about young Ruby the Raccoon.
In Moore's work for Hillside Lullaby, the illustrator's "luminous" images focusing on sleepy animals and the coming of night "evoke both the cozy comforts of bedtime and the dreamy mystery of the nighttime world," according to Booklist reviewer Gillian Engberg. In School Library Journal, Angela J. Reynolds wrote of the same picture book that "the delightful animals, painted with soft edges, are the main feature here, and youngsters will enjoy nodding off with these gentle, twilight-hued images in their heads," while a Kirkus Reviews critic called the book "a must for every child with a window to the great outdoors and a heart that will listen to nature's song. Reviewing Bear of My Heart, a Publishers Weekly critic maintained that the "velvety textures and soft hues" featured in Moore's watercolors "convey an idyllic life," and Booklist reviewer Hazel Rochman noted that Ruby's Perfect Day, a collaboration between Moore and Hill, is enriched by "exuberant line-and-watercolor pictures [that] show the small raccoon as part of a cheerful community."
