Sidelights

The picture book The Mighty Street Sweeper marked the debut title of author and artist Patrick Moore. Moore, who has created editorial artwork for magazines such as Esquire, incorporates digital computer techniques into his vibrant images. In The Mighty Street Sweeper he centers his story on an outdated sweeper that pales in comparison to the newer models used to sweep the road. Jake, a squirrel who operates the machine, knows that the old street sweeper, though outdated, is still the best machine for the job. As a Kirkus Reviews critic remarked, Moore's tale of a humble street sweeper "honors the common, but far from average, making even the most ordinary seem extraordinary." A Publishers Weekly reviewer commented of The Mighty Street Sweeper that Moore "makes a winning children's book debut with this tribute to a distinctive truck."

In addition to commenting on his story, critics have also acknowledged Moore's bold designs for The Mighty Street Sweeper. Betty Carter in her review of the picture book for Horn Book, cited the author/illustrator for creating "bright, uncluttered illustrations" that "feature earnest animal drivers and create a humorous background." Linda Staskus, writing in School Library Journal, concluded that The Mighty Street Sweeper "will delight young truck lovers."
