The National Board Technical Scholarships (Other/Scholarship)

Purpose: To provide financial assistance to children, stepchildren, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren of past and present staff and members of the National Board and the past or present Commissioned Inspectors employed by a

member jurisdiction. Focus: Engineering. Qualif.: Applicant must be currently enrolled full-time in an accredited four-year college or university in the United States or Canada; or be enrolled as a full-time student for the 2008-2009 academic year with sufficient college credits to be classified as a sophomore, junior, or senior; major in mechanical, manufacturing, electrical, industrial, welding, or chemical engineering, or other closely related engineering major; possess a cumulative college GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale; a citizen of the United States or Canada; a child, step-child, grandchild, or great-grandchild of a past or present National Board member (living or deceased), of a past or present Commissioned Inspector (living or deceased), employed by a member jurisdiction, or of a past or present National Board employee (living or deceased). In order for the child, step-child, grandchild, or greatgrandchild to be eligible, the National Board member must have been a member for at least one year, the Commissioned Inspector must have been employed by the member jurisdiction for at least one year, or the National Board employee must have been a full-time employee for at least one year. Criteria: Applicants will be evaluated on the strength of their academic performance, proficiencies and demonstrated skills in the areas of interest to the National Board and its members.

Funds Avail.: $6,000. To Apply: Applicant must read the application carefully and complete all sections; include a personal statement of 500-750 words expressing: a) how college experiences-academics, extracurricular activities, outside activities, and work/internship experiences-are shaping his/her educational and career goals; b) why he/she should be considered for this scholarship award; and c) other information that may be of importance to the selection committee in its review of the application; include, or request to have sent, two letters of recommendation from appropriate college instructors or other college representatives on official school letterhead; include, or request to have sent, a letter of recommendation from a current National Board member, that is the Chief Boiler inspector in a jurisdiction; a listing of current National Board members, including contact information, is shown on National Board’s website: www.nationalboard.org (Members Listing); include-or request to have sent-an official transcript from your college; include the names and contact information for two persons (not family members) you have known for at least one year, to be used as personal references; sign the last page of the application; mail the completed application to the National Board at the address on the application form. Deadline: February 29.
