Euboea
Euboea (Évvoia) Island in the w Aegean Sea, se central Greece; the administrative centre is Khalkís. Under Athenian domination (506–411 bc), it was taken by Philip II of Macedon in 338 bc, then held successively by the Romans, Byzantines, the Venetians and the Turks, before being incorporated into independent Greece in 1830. Industries: livestock, grapes, timber, grain, marble quarrying, lignite and magnesite mining. Area: 3654sq km (1411sq mi). Pop. (2002 est.) 219,700.
