Kenilworth, dictum of

Kenilworth, dictum of, 1266. Simon de Montfort's death at Evesham in August 1265 brought to an end the protracted civil war of Henry III's reign, though young Simon de Montfort escaped to France, and Kenilworth castle held out for another year. The dictum of Kenilworth of 31 October 1266 was an attempt at a reconciliation, offering a general amnesty, but reasserting in full the king's rights.
