INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ENGLISH
INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ENGLISH. Short form ISE. The STANDARD language used internationally. The term has two linked senses: (1) The sum-total of all STANDARD ENGLISH usage worldwide, but with particular reference to the norms of AmE and BrE, and possibly AusE, varieties which have established works of reference such as grammars, dictionaries, and style guides which broadly delimit national USAGE. (2) A more specific kind of standard usage that draws on such sources but increasingly has a transnational identity of its own, especially in print (as illustrated most particularly by the texts of ‘quality’ English-language newspapers worldwide) and the usage of such international organizations as the UNITED NATIONS. Compare INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH, STANDARD ENGLISH, TEIL, WORLD STANDARD ENGLISH.
