National Association of Industrialists
National Association of Industrialists
Founded 18 November 1944 in Medellín at a meeting of several of the country's largest manufacturers, the National Association of Industrialists (Asociación Nacional de Industriales—ANDI) is one of the best-organized and most powerful producer groups (gremios) in Colombia. Its emergence reflected not only the rapid growth of Colombian industry at the time but also the desire of industrialists, led by the Echavarría clan and other wealthy capitalists from Medellín, to promote their interests by urging the government to pursue protectionist economic policies. Speaking for major sectors of Colombian business, the group has had an impact through its outspoken support of the free-enterprise system, as well as the work of its economists and the advice of its consultants.
