American rain forest Like the other three regions of the rain forest, the American region is distinctive not by virtue of its physiognomic characteristics, but because of its floristic composition. For instance, of the non-tree plants, bromeliads (Bromeliaceae) and cacti (Cactaceae) are important, as well as the orchids and ferns more generally associated with the rain forest.
