La Rue, Pierre de (Petrus Platensis, Pier-chon, Pierson, Pierzon, Perisone, Pierazon de la Ruellien), eminent Flemish composer; b. probably in Tournai, c. 1460; d. Courtrai, Nov. 20, 1518. The first record of his activities is as a tenor at Siena Cathedral (1482; 1483-85). He then was at ’s-Herto-genbosch Cathedral (1489–92), and subsequently became a member of the Marian Brotherhood. He most likely was also a singer in Archduke Maximilian’s Hofkapelle in Burgundy. He was canon at the court of Philippe le Beau in Mechelen (1501), prebend at Courtrai, Namur, and Termonde (from 1501), and cantor principis at Courtrai (1502). He returned to the Netherlands about 1508. He was a singer at the court of Margaret of Austria at Mechelen, and then served Archduke Karl (1514–16). He wrote 47 masses, several of which have been publ. in modern eds., as well as 7 Mass sections, 7 Magnificats, a Lamentation, motets, etc. For his works, see A. Tirabassi, ed., Pierre de La Rue: Liber missarum (Kassel, 1941), and M. Picker, The Chanson Albums of Marguerite of Austria (Berkeley and Los Angeles, 1965).
