Funds Available: Undergraduate students may borrow up to $4,000 per year, to a maximum of $20,000; graduate and professional school students may borrow up to $6,000 per year, to a maximum of $40,000 (including any Federal Perkins Loans borrowed as an undergraduate). Recently, the average loan was $1,790. The interest rate is 5%. The monthly repayment amount depends on the size of the debt and the length of the repayment period (which may not exceed 10 years). Cancellation of 100% of the loan is provided if the borrower becomes totally and permanently disabled or dies; becomes a full-time teacher in a designated elementary or secondary school serving students from low-income families; becomes a full-time special education teacher of children with disabilities; becomes a full-time qualified professional provider of early intervention services for the disabled; becomes a full-time teacher of mathematics, science, foreign languages, bilingual education, or other teacher shortage areas; becomes a full-time employee of a public or nonprofit child or family service agency providing services to high-risk children and their families from low-income communities; becomes a full-time nurse or medical technician; serves as a full-time law enforcement or corrections officer; or serves as a staff member in the educational component of a Head Start program. Up to 70% of a loan may be cancelled if the student serves as a VISTA or Peace Corps volunteer. Up to 50% a loan may be cancelled if the student serves in the armed forces in areas of hostilities or eminent danger. Duration: Up to 5 years of undergraduate study and up to 5 additional years of graduate or professional study.

Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens who have at least a high school diploma or GED certificate, are registered with the Selective Service if required, are enrolled as regular students working toward a degree or certificate in an eligible program, and have a valid Social Security number. Financial need as calculated by federal formulas must be demonstrated. Deadline for Receipt: Each participating college and university sets its own deadline. Additional Information: The grace period for Perkins loans is 9 months after graduation, leaving school, or dropping below half-time enrollment. Deferments of loans are available while the recipient is enrolled in an approved graduate or postgraduate program, in an approved rehabilitation training program for the disabled, or for 3 years of unemployment or economic hardship.

Applicants must be interested in working on an epilepsy research project under the supervision of a qualified mentor. Because the program is designed as a training opportunity, the quality of the training plans and environment are considered in the selection process. Other selection criteria include the quality of the proposed project, the relevance of the proposed work to epilepsy, the applicant's interest in the field of epilepsy, the applicant's qualifications, and the mentor's qualifications, including his or her commitment to the student and the project. Selection is based on community background, including family structure and area where the applicant grew up; work experience, including allied health care and non-allied health care work in medically underserved areas; community service, including volunteer service and activities in medically underserved areas; career goals; academic performance; and financial need.
