Funds Available: Single discipline awards are $3,500 for first place, $2,500 for second place, and $1,500 for third place. Interprofessional awards are $7,500 for first place, $5,000 for second place, and $3,000 for third place. Duration: This competition is held annually.

Eligibility Requirements: This competition is open to students enrolled full or part time in a baccalaureate or higher degree health professions education program in a school that is affiliated, through a participating professional association, with the Federation of Associations of Schools of the Health Professions (FASHP). Applicants must submit a proposal, up to 2,500 words, for 1) an innovative health promotion project focusing on a special population group, or 2) a disease prevention project for a targeted community. They must be citizens, nationals, or permanent residents of the United States and attending a U.S. college or university. Papers may be entered in the single discipline category (for 1 or more authors in the same discipline) or the interprofessional category (for students from 2 or more different health profession disciplines collaborating on a single project). Proposals for new projects, as well as completed or currently implemented projects, are acceptable. They may have been developed to meet course requirements or as part of service learning or other academic experiences. Basic or clinical research proposals are not eligible. Students first submit their papers to a faculty sponsor or representative at their school; each school, college, or program selects 1 single discipline paper and 1 interprofessional paper and submits those to the appropriate professional association. Each association then selects up to 10 of its best papers to be forwarded to the program administrator, and a selection committee chooses 10 top entries for the single discipline category and 10 top entries for the interprofessional category. Selection is based on 1) clarity of problem statement, objectives, implementation plan, project significance, soundness of evaluation plan, and reasonableness of budget; 2) innovation in approach to health promotion or disease prevention; 3) feasibility of approach in regard to implementation of the project; and 4) potential impact on a community or target population. Final selection of winners is then made by senior staff of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Deadline for Receipt: Students must submit entries to their school by mid-February of each year; schools must forward winners to the respective professional associations by mid-March; associations forward their top entries to the program administrator in early April; semifinalist entries must be received by DHHS by the end of April. Additional Information: DHHS established this competition in 1982; since 1998, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing has administered the program on behalf of the FASHP. Students applying as creditworthy or with a creditworthy coborrower may borrow up to the cost of education with an annual cap of $45,000. The cumulative debt maximum for graduate students, including all undergraduate and graduate loans, is $195,000 for allopathy, medical, osteopathy, and dental students, or $142,500 for all other graduate or professional students. The maximum residency loan is $12,500. Repayment begins 9 months after graduation. For borrowers who have paid a guarantee fee, the interest rate is 0.25% below the prime rate as published in the Wall Street Journal. For creditworthy students who pay no guarantee fee, interest is the prime rate plus 0.25%. For creditready students who pay no guarantee fee, interest is the prime rate plus 0.5% Duration: Loan recipients have up to 25 years to repay, depending on the total amount borrowed.

Eligibility Requirements: This is a credit-based loan and is not based on financial need. Applicants must be 1) undergraduates studying acupuncture, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, or physician's assistant; or 2) graduate students working on a degree in allopathic medicine, cell and molecular biology, cell and molecular pathogenesis and cancer, clinical psychology, dentistry, neurobiology, neuropharmacology, nurse anesthesia, nurse midwifery, nurse practitioner, nursing, nutrition, occupational therapy, optometry, osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician's assistant, podiatry, public health, vascular biology, or veterinary medicine. All students in approved health disciplines can apply if they are enrolled on at least a half-time basis and may borrow in their own name as credit-ready if they have good or no credit history and are U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens. Graduate students may apply as creditworthy or with a creditworthy coborrower if they have an established 2-year satisfactory credit history; have a stable residence and employment history; have sufficient current income to meet criteria; if self-employed, have been in business for at least 2 years; and are U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have lived in the United States for the previous 2 years. Residency loans are also available to fourth-year graduate students who need funds to cover the expenses of interviewing and relocating for internships and residencies. Recently, 284 new scholarships were awarded. Funds Available: This program provides a monthly stipend (currently, $1,065) and payment of tuition, fees, books, supplies, and equipment. This is a scholarship/loan program. Participants owe 1 year of obligated service in the National Health Service Corps for each full or partial year of support provided under this program. The minimum service obligation is 2 years. Duration: 1 year; may be renewed for up to 3 additional years.

Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to U.S. citizens and nationals who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment as full-time students at an accredited U.S. allopathic or osteopathic medical school (with a specialty in family medicine, general pediatrics, general internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, or psychiatry), family nurse practitioner program (master's degree in nursing, or post-master's or post-baccalaureate certificate), nurse-midwifery program (master's degree in nursing or post-master's or post-baccalaureate certificate), physician assistant program (certificate, associate, baccalaureate, or master's program), or dental school (with a residency in general practice or pediatric dentistry). Preference is given to applicants who demonstrate geographic flexibility and a strong interest in providing primary health care to underserved populations nationally. First priority is given to former recipients of these scholar-ships who are seeking renewal and medical students who have received a Scholarship for Students of Exceptional Financial Need. Second priority is given to applicants who demonstrate the highest probability that they will continue to practice in health professional shortage areas (HPSAs) after they have completed their service commitments; those characteristics include strong primary care post-service career goals in HPSAs, experience within indigent or underserved communities, understanding and acceptance of this program, and intent to participate in pre-professional clinical experiences in rural or urban community-based health care facilities serving HPSAs. Third priority is given to applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds. Deadline for Receipt: March of each year. Additional Information: This funding was first offered in 1978-79. It is the successor to the Public Health and National Health Service Corps Scholarship Training Program, which was in effect from 1973-74 to 1977-78. Priority is given to students entering their junior or senior year; support is provided to freshmen and sophomores only if remaining funds are available. Selection is based on academic performance, work experience and community background, faculty/employer recommendations, and applicant's reasons for seeking the scholarship. They may be studying in any state. Recipients must agree to serve in a designated health-care facility in Hawaii upon completion of training. First priority is given to former scholars who have completed their previous service obligation and are seeking another year of support. Second priority is given to applicants who appear to have characteristics that increase the probability they will continue to serve underserved Native Hawaiians after the completion of their service obligations. Funds Available: For undergraduate students enrolled in an accredited bachelor of science degree in dental hygiene, nursing, or a pre-medicine or pre-dental program, the maximum loan is $5,000 per year for full-time enrollment. Medical (M.D. or D.O.) students are eligible for loans in the amount of tuition, to a maximum of $25,000 per year. Students in 6-year medical programs may receive $10,000 per year for the first 2 years and up to $25,000 per year for the last 4 years. Physicians and dentists in primary care residency programs are eligible for loans of $10,000 per year. This is a scholarship/loan program. Loans of 5 years or more are forgiven at the rate of 20% per year for qualifying employment in an area of defined need (a geographic area or a population that is experiencing a shortage of primary health care providers in Missouri). Applicants must have been accepted by or currently be attending a Missouri school offering a course of study leading to a degree as 1) a doctor of allopathic (M.D.) or osteopathic (D. O.) medicine; 2) a doctor of dentistry (D.D.S.); 3) a bachelor of science (B.S.) in a field leading to acceptance into a school of medicine or into a master of science (M.S.N.) degree program leading to certification as a primary care advanced practice nurse; or 4) a bachelor of science (B.S.) in dental hygiene. Funds Available: The award depends on the financial need of the recipient, to a total of $12,000 per year. This is a scholarship/loan program; loans are forgiven if the student performs the required professional service as an osteopathic physician or osteopathic physician assistant in a designated shortage area in New Mexico. Loans of less than 3 years require 1 year of practice for each academic year of the loan. For loans of 3 years or more, 40% of the principal plus accrued interest is forgiven upon completion of the first year of service, 30% of the principal plus accrued interest is forgiven upon completion of the second year of service, and the remainder of the principal plus accrued interest is forgiven upon completion of the third year of service. If recipients fail to complete the required service, they are assessed a penalty of up to 3 times the principal due plus 18% interest. Duration: 1 year; may be renewed.

Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to residents of New Mexico interested in preparing for a career as an osteopathic physician or osteopathic physician assistant. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited public school of osteopathy education in the United States. As a condition of the loan, they must declare an intent to practice in a designated shortage area of New Mexico for at least 1 year after completing their education. Eligibility Requirements: North Carolina residents are eligible to apply for this program if they have been accepted as full-time students in an accredited associate, baccalaureate, master's, or doctoral program leading to a degree in 1 of the following areas: allied health (including audiology/communications assistant, cytotechnology, dental hygiene, diagnostic medical sonographer, imaging technologist, medical technology, nuclear medicine technologist, occupational therapy/assistant, physician assistant, physical therapy/assistant, radiation therapist, radiography, respiratory therapy, and speech language pathology); clinical psychology (Ph.D. level only); dentistry; dietetics and nutrition (graduate level only); mathematics education; medicine (including chiropractic medicine, emergency medicine, family medicine, geriatrics, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, osteopathic medicine, pediatrics, podiatry, primary care medicine, and psychiatry); nursing (including anesthetist, family nurse practitioner, nursing administration, general nursing, and midwifery); optometry; pharmacy; public health (graduate level only); science education (including biology, chemistry, communications and technologies, computer and information sciences, engineering, and physical science); social work (graduate level only); and veterinary medicine. U.S. citizenship is required. Title of Award: Hinson-Hazlewood Health Education Loan Program Area, Field, or Subject: Dentistry; Medicine; Medicine, Osteopathic; Optometry; Pharmaceutical sciences; Public health; Veterinary science and medicine Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Four Year College, Graduate Number Awarded: Varies each year. Funds Available: The maximum annual loan is $12,500 for pharmacy and public health students, or $20,000 for medicine, dentistry, optometry, osteopathy, or veterinary medicine students. The origination fee is 3%. After a grace period of 9 months, repayment must be completed within 25 years at a minimum monthly payment of $50. The current interest rate is 5.25% which begins to accrue immediately, even while the student is in school. Duration: 1 year; may be renewed up to 4 additional years for pharmacy students or 3 additional years for other students. The maximum total loan is $50,000 for pharmacy and public health students or $80,000 for medicine, dentistry, optometry, osteopathy, or veterinary medicine students.

Applicants must be studying for a graduate or professional degree in pharmacy, public health, medicine, dentistry, optometry, osteopathy, or veterinary medicine. They must be able to demonstrate financial need and enroll full time. U.S. citizenship is required. Additional Information: Applications must be submitted through the financial aid office at the college or university attended. This program is part of the Hinton-Hazelwood College Student Loan Program (HHCSLP).

To provide scholarship/loans for primary care health professional education to students who agree to work in designated areas of Washington.

Title of Award: Washington State Health Professional Scholarship Program Area, Field, or Subject: Dental hygiene; Dentistry; Medicine; Medicine, Osteopathic; Midwifery; Nursing; Pharmaceutical sciences Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Graduate, Under-graduate Number Awarded: Varies each year. Funds Available: The stipend is intended to cover eligible expenses: tuition, books, equipment, fees, and room and board. This is a scholarship/loan program. Recipients who fail to complete the course of study are required to repay the amount received, plus a penalty and interest. Scholars who fail to serve in health professional shortage areas in Washington are required to repay the scholarship, with penalty plus interest. The interest rate on the repayments is 8% for the first 4 years and 10% for the fifth year. Duration: Up to 5 years.

Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited program leading to eligibility for licensure in Washington State in a designated health profession. They must agree to practice in Washington for 3 to 5 years following graduation, but they do not need to be Washington residents or to attend an educational institution in the state. Currently, there are no geographic restrictions for registered nurses or practical nurses. For other primary care health professionals (M.D., D.O., N.D., P.A., N.P., C.N.M., L.M.), dental care professionals (D.D.S., R.D.H.), and pharmacists, service must be in designated areas of the state. State correctional facilities, state mental health facilities, community and migrant health centers, and any other facility with more than 40% of its caseload consisting of Medicaid and sliding fee patients also qualify. Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to residents of 13 western states who are interested in pursuing professional study at selected out-of-state institutions, usually because those fields of study are not available in their home states. The financial status of the applicants is not considered. Interested students must apply for admission and for PSEP assistance directly from the institution of their choice. They must be certified by their state of residence to become an exchange student and be seeking enrollment at the first professional degree level. Deadline for Receipt: In most states, the deadline for receiving completed applications for certification is in October. After obtaining certification, students must still apply to the school of their choice, which also sets its own deadline.
