Funds Available: Loans up to $1,000 per year are available. No interest is charged. An origination fee of 3% of the amount disbursed is added to the principal balance to be repaid. This is a scholarship/loan program. Recipients are forgiven 20% of the total loan for each 1-year period they are employed full time in Alaska law enforcement or related fields, up to 5 years. Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to full-time undergraduates working on a degree in law enforcement, probation and parole, penology, or other closely-related field anywhere in the United States. Funds Available: Undergraduate students may borrow up to $4,000 per year, to a maximum of $20,000; graduate and professional school students may borrow up to $6,000 per year, to a maximum of $40,000 (including any Federal Perkins Loans borrowed as an undergraduate). Recently, the average loan was $1,790. The interest rate is 5%. The monthly repayment amount depends on the size of the debt and the length of the repayment period (which may not exceed 10 years). Cancellation of 100% of the loan is provided if the borrower becomes totally and permanently disabled or dies; becomes a full-time teacher in a designated elementary or secondary school serving students from low-income families; becomes a full-time special education teacher of children with disabilities; becomes a full-time qualified professional provider of early intervention services for the disabled; becomes a full-time teacher of mathematics, science, foreign languages, bilingual education, or other teacher shortage areas; becomes a full-time employee of a public or nonprofit child or family service agency providing services to high-risk children and their families from low-income communities; becomes a full-time nurse or medical technician; serves as a full-time law enforcement or corrections officer; or serves as a staff member in the educational component of a Head Start program. Up to 70% of a loan may be cancelled if the student serves as a VISTA or Peace Corps volunteer. Up to 50% a loan may be cancelled if the student serves in the armed forces in areas of hostilities or eminent danger. Duration: Up to 5 years of undergraduate study and up to 5 additional years of graduate or professional study.

Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens who have at least a high school diploma or GED certificate, are registered with the Selective Service if required, are enrolled as regular students working toward a degree or certificate in an eligible program, and have a valid Social Security number. Financial need as calculated by federal formulas must be demonstrated. Deadline for Receipt: Each participating college and university sets its own deadline. Additional Information: The grace period for Perkins loans is 9 months after graduation, leaving school, or dropping below half-time enrollment. Deferments of loans are available while the recipient is enrolled in an approved graduate or postgraduate program, in an approved rehabilitation training program for the disabled, or for 3 years of unemployment or economic hardship.

Recipients must agree to work in a Maryland community-based program that is licensed by the Developmental Disabilities Administration or approved by the Mental Hygiene Administration, or in a residential program that is licensed by the Department of Human Resources or the Department of Juvenile Justice. The service obligation must begin within 6 months of graduation. To provide financial assistance to currently-enrolled undergraduate and graduate students who are the children of sheriffs or former sheriffs in Texas and majoring in law enforcement or political science.

Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to the children of a sheriff or former sheriff serving the state of Texas. Applicants must be enrolled in a college or university on a full-time basis (at least 12 semester hours for undergraduates and 9 semester hours for graduate students), be majoring in law enforcement or political science, be less than 25 years of age, have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA, and not have been convicted of a crime that would make them ineligible for employment. They must submit with their application a brief biographical sketch (up to 2 pages) stating why they believe they deserve the scholarship. Financial need is not considered in the selection process. Deadline for Receipt: October of each year for the fall semester; February of each year for the spring semester. Title of Award: Careers That Work! Scholarship Area, Field, or Subject: Business administration; Computer and information sciences; Cosmetology; Criminal justice; Criminology; Health care services; Information science and technology; Law enforcement; Medicine, Holistic/alternative Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Vocational/Occupational Number Awarded: 3 each year at each high school in Washington. Funds Available: The stipend is a $1,000 award certificate to be used to pay for tuition at a career college in Washington. Duration: 1 year.

Eligibility Requirements: Open to high school seniors in Washington who are interested in attending 1 of the 26 career colleges in the state, to prepare for a career in such fields as computer or information technology, health care, cosmetology, massage, business, criminal justice, or health occupations. The sponsor provides 3 scholarships to each high school in Washington. Recipients are then selected by the scholarship directors or counselors at their high school. Additional Information: This scholarship was established in 1999.

Title of Award: Women in Federal Law Enforcement Scholarship Area, Field, or Subject: Computer and information sciences; Criminal justice; Criminology; Law enforcement Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Four Year College, Graduate Number Awarded: Several each year. Funds Available: Stipends range from $500 to $2,000. Duration: 1 year; may be renewed.

Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to women who are enrolled full time at an accredited 4-year college or university (or at a community college with the intention of transferring to a 4-year school). Applicants must be preparing for a career in law enforcement (including special agents, forensic scientists, intelligence analysts, fingerprint and firearms examiners, bomb technicians, public information specialists, computer specialists, attorneys, and other related fields). They must have completed at least 1 year of college and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students in graduate and postgraduate programs are also eligible, but those working on an associate degree are not. Along with their application, they must submit a 500-word essay describing a community project in which they have been involved and the results or impact to the community. Selection is based on academic potential, achievement, and commitment to serving communities in the field of law enforcement. Deadline for Receipt: April of each year.
