To provide loans to help undergraduate and graduate students in specified health-related fields finance their college education.

Title of Award: Health Professional Loans (HPL) Area, Field, or Subject: Biological and clinical sciences; Dentistry; Health care services; Medicine; Medicine, Holistic/alternative; Medicine, Osteopathic; Midwifery; Neuroscience; Nursing; Nutrition; Occupational therapy; Oncology; Optometry; Pharmaceutical sciences; Physical therapy; Podiatry; Psychology; Public health; Veterinary science and medicine Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Graduate, Undergraduate Funds Available: Individuals may borrow annually up to $25,000 as credit-ready in their own name. Students applying as creditworthy or with a creditworthy coborrower may borrow up to the cost of education with an annual cap of $45,000. The cumulative debt maximum for graduate students, including all undergraduate and graduate loans, is $195,000 for allopathy, medical, osteopathy, and dental students, or $142,500 for all other graduate or professional students. The maximum residency loan is $12,500. Repayment begins 9 months after graduation. For borrowers who have paid a guarantee fee, the interest rate is 0.25% below the prime rate as published in the Wall Street Journal. For creditworthy students who pay no guarantee fee, interest is the prime rate plus 0.25%. For creditready students who pay no guarantee fee, interest is the prime rate plus 0.5% Duration: Loan recipients have up to 25 years to repay, depending on the total amount borrowed.

Eligibility Requirements: This is a credit-based loan and is not based on financial need. Applicants must be 1) undergraduates studying acupuncture, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, or physician's assistant; or 2) graduate students working on a degree in allopathic medicine, cell and molecular biology, cell and molecular pathogenesis and cancer, clinical psychology, dentistry, neurobiology, neuropharmacology, nurse anesthesia, nurse midwifery, nurse practitioner, nursing, nutrition, occupational therapy, optometry, osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician's assistant, podiatry, public health, vascular biology, or veterinary medicine. All students in approved health disciplines can apply if they are enrolled on at least a half-time basis and may borrow in their own name as credit-ready if they have good or no credit history and are U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens. Graduate students may apply as creditworthy or with a creditworthy coborrower if they have an established 2-year satisfactory credit history; have a stable residence and employment history; have sufficient current income to meet criteria; if self-employed, have been in business for at least 2 years; and are U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have lived in the United States for the previous 2 years. Residency loans are also available to fourth-year graduate students who need funds to cover the expenses of interviewing and relocating for internships and residencies. Deadline for Receipt: Applications may be submitted at any time. Additional Information: There are no application fees. However, a guarantee fee of 6% of the total loan amount may be deducted from the loan check when the loan is disbursed for students applying as creditworthy or with a creditworthy coborrower. For students applying in their own name as credit-ready, the fee is 6% when the loan is disbursed and 3% at repayment.

To provide funding to undergraduate and graduate students interested in working on a summer research training project in a field relevant to epilepsy.

Title of Award: Behavioral Sciences Student Fellowships in Epilepsy Area, Field, or Subject: Anthropology; Behavioral sciences; Counseling/Guidance; Economics; Epilepsy; Nursing; Political science; Psychology; Rehabilitation, Physical/Psychological; Social work; Sociology Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Graduate, Undergraduate Number Awarded: Varies each year; recently, 4 of these fellowships were awarded. Funds Available: The grant is $3,000. Duration: 3 months during the summer.

Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to undergraduate and graduate students in a behavioral science program relevant to epilepsy research or clinical care, including, but not limited to, sociology, social work, psychology, anthropology, nursing, economics, vocational rehabilitation, counseling, and political science. Applicants must be interested in working on an epilepsy research project under the supervision of a qualified mentor. Because the program is designed as a training opportunity, the quality of the training plans and environment are considered in the selection process. Other selection criteria include the quality of the proposed project, the relevance of the proposed work to epilepsy, the applicant's interest in the field of epilepsy, the applicant's qualifications, and the mentor's qualifications, including his or her commitment to the student and the project. U.S. citizenship is not required, but the project must be conducted in the United States. Applications from women, members of minority groups, and people with disabilities are especially encouraged. The program is not intended for students working on a dissertation research project. Deadline for Receipt: March of each year.
