Special consideration is given to students working on a degree in a field related to agriculture. Applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher and be younger than 24 years of age. Along with their application, they must submit a 300-word essay on how they have served their community within the last 2 years. Financial need is not considered in the selection process. Additional Information: This program was established in 2003 as the successor to the sponsor's Student Ambassador program, which awarded more than $260,000 in scholarships to college students since its beginning in 1989. The students selected to receive these scholarships travel to Kansas City, Missouri in September for training and return in October to participate in the American Royal Livestock, Horse Show and Rodeo, as well as other media events, civic organization meetings, school visits, and related activities. They speak on behalf of the American Royal about their experiences in agriculture and promote the agricultural industry.

Selection is based on: scholarship, with special consideration given to students who demonstrate improvement in academic work from freshman to sophomore to junior years (20 points); character and personal development, including participation in non-university activities and service to others (10 points); student membership in the society and active participation in a student branch organization (25 points); participation in other school activities (15 points); leadership qualities, creativity, initiative, and responsibility (25 points); and level of financial self-support provided by the student (5 points). Funds Available: The stipend is $3,500. Travel expenses between the recipient's home and the scholarship experience site are also provided. Funds are awarded in 2 installments. The first installment of $2,500 is made at the first annual society meeting the recipient attends; the remaining $1,000 is paid upon receipt of a written report to the Agronomic Science Foundation Board of Trustees. Duration: The activity may be conducted at a time convenient to the recipient, but it must be completed within 1 year of receipt of the award and must last at least 4 weeks.

Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to upper-division students (must have completed their sophomore year) who are majoring in agronomy, crop science, soil science, and other related fields. Applicants must be interested in participating in activities that will enhance their studies of agriculture. Such activities may include visiting 1 of the International Agricultural Research Centers, traveling and studying in a foreign country, or expanding their agricultural experience in the United States. Preference is given to applicants who are active members of clubs affiliated with the Students of Agronomy, Soils, and Environmental Sciences. Deadline for Receipt: March of each year. In addition, the faculty committees select graduating seniors to receive plaques in 4 general study areas (applied arts, fine arts, liberal arts, and science and mathematics); certificate winners may not also receive plaques; the number of plaques awarded by each high school also depends on the size of the school (2 plaques with enrollment of 1 to 199 students in grades 10-12, 3 plaques with 200 to 599 students, and 4 plaques for schools with more than 600 students).
