Title of Award: Sylvia Forman Prize Competition Area, Field, or Subject: Anthropology; Women's studies; Writing Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Graduate, Undergraduate Number Awarded: At least 2 each year: 1 for an undergraduate and 1 for a graduate student. Funds Available: Each of the winning essays receives a cash award. Duration: The competition is held annually.

Eligibility Requirements: Both graduate and undergraduate students may compete. They are invited to submit essays (up to 35 pages), in any subfield of anthropology, that focus on such topics as feminist analysis of women's work, reproduction, sexuality, religion, language and expressive culture, family and kin relations, economic development, gender and material culture, gender and biology, women and development, globalization, or race and class. Essays that have been submitted for publication but have not yet been accepted may be eligible as entries. Already accepted or published articles may not be submitted. Only 1 submission per student is accepted. Selection is based on the use of feminist theory to analyze a particular issue; organization, quality, and clarity of writing; effective use of both theory and data; significance to feminist scholarship; timeliness and relevance of the topic; and originality of work. To provide funding to undergraduate and graduate students interested in working on a summer research training project in a field relevant to epilepsy.

Title of Award: Behavioral Sciences Student Fellowships in Epilepsy Area, Field, or Subject: Anthropology; Behavioral sciences; Counseling/Guidance; Economics; Epilepsy; Nursing; Political science; Psychology; Rehabilitation, Physical/Psychological; Social work; Sociology Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Graduate, Undergraduate Number Awarded: Varies each year; recently, 4 of these fellowships were awarded. Funds Available: The grant is $3,000. Duration: 3 months during the summer.

Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to undergraduate and graduate students in a behavioral science program relevant to epilepsy research or clinical care, including, but not limited to, sociology, social work, psychology, anthropology, nursing, economics, vocational rehabilitation, counseling, and political science. Applicants must be interested in working on an epilepsy research project under the supervision of a qualified mentor. Because the program is designed as a training opportunity, the quality of the training plans and environment are considered in the selection process. Other selection criteria include the quality of the proposed project, the relevance of the proposed work to epilepsy, the applicant's interest in the field of epilepsy, the applicant's qualifications, and the mentor's qualifications, including his or her commitment to the student and the project. U.S. citizenship is not required, but the project must be conducted in the United States. Applications from women, members of minority groups, and people with disabilities are especially encouraged. The program is not intended for students working on a dissertation research project. Deadline for Receipt: March of each year. Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to anthropology majors with junior standing at a college or university with a chapter of the society. Candidates must be members of the society and nominated by their chapters (each chapter may nominate only 1 candidate). Selection is based on undergraduate grades and letters of recommendation. To provide scholarship/loans to students in Maryland who wish to prepare for a career as a child care provider.

Title of Award: Maryland Child Care Provider Scholarship Program Area, Field, or Subject: Child care; Child development; Education, Early childhood Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Professional, Undergraduate Number Awarded: Varies each year. Funds Available: Stipends at 4-year institutions are $2,000 per year for full-time study, $1,000 for part-time; at community colleges, annual stipends are $1,000 for full-time study, $500 for part-time. The total amount of all state awards may not exceed the cost of attendance as determined by the school's financial aid office or $17,800, whichever is less. Within 12 months of graduation, recipients must provide 1 year of child care service in Maryland for each year of financial aid received under this program; failure to comply with that service obligation will require the recipient to repay the scholarship money with interest. Teaching in a public school in Maryland does not fulfill the service requirement. Duration: 1 year; may be renewed for up to 3 additional years of full-time study provided the recipient maintains a GPA of 2.0 or higher.

Eligibility Requirements: Eligible are residents of Maryland who are enrolled or plan to enroll in a program leading to an associate or bachelor's degree in a Maryland institution of higher education that offers an undergraduate program in early childhood education or child development. Full-time enrollment is required, although part-time study is allowed if the applicant is employed for a minimum of 15 hours per week at a child care or family day care center. Financial need is not considered in the selection process. Deadline for Receipt: June of each year.

To provide financial assistance and work experience to students of color who are interested in working during the summer on an organizing campaign for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).

Title of Award: AFSCME/UNCF Union Scholars Program Area, Field, or Subject: African-American studies; Anthropology; Asian studies; Economics; Hispanic American studies; History; Industrial and labor relations; Native American studies; Political science; Psychology; Social work; Sociology; United States studies; Women's studies Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Undergraduate Number Awarded: Varies each year. Funds Available: The program provides a stipend of $4,000, on-site housing at their location, a week-long orientation and training, and (based on successful performance during the organizing campaign) a $5,000 scholarship. Duration: 10 weeks for the organizing assignment; 1 year for the scholarship.

Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to students of color, including African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian/Pacific Islander Americans, and American Indians/Alaskan Natives. Applicants must be second semester sophomores or juniors and majoring in ethnic studies, women's studies, labor studies, American studies, sociology, anthropology, history, political science, psychology, social work, or economics. They must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher and be interested in working on a union organizing campaign at 1 of several locations in the United States. Deadline for Receipt: February of each year.
