Title of Award: Secretary's Award for Innovations in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Area, Field, or Subject: Dentistry; Health care services; Medicine; Medicine, Chiropractic; Medicine, Osteopathic; Nursing; Optometry; Pharmaceutical sciences; Podiatry; Public health; Veterinary science and medicine Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Graduate, Four Year College Number Awarded: 6 each year. Funds Available: Single discipline awards are $3,500 for first place, $2,500 for second place, and $1,500 for third place. Interprofessional awards are $7,500 for first place, $5,000 for second place, and $3,000 for third place. Duration: This competition is held annually.

Eligibility Requirements: This competition is open to students enrolled full or part time in a baccalaureate or higher degree health professions education program in a school that is affiliated, through a participating professional association, with the Federation of Associations of Schools of the Health Professions (FASHP). Applicants must submit a proposal, up to 2,500 words, for 1) an innovative health promotion project focusing on a special population group, or 2) a disease prevention project for a targeted community. They must be citizens, nationals, or permanent residents of the United States and attending a U.S. college or university. Papers may be entered in the single discipline category (for 1 or more authors in the same discipline) or the interprofessional category (for students from 2 or more different health profession disciplines collaborating on a single project). Proposals for new projects, as well as completed or currently implemented projects, are acceptable. They may have been developed to meet course requirements or as part of service learning or other academic experiences. Basic or clinical research proposals are not eligible. Students first submit their papers to a faculty sponsor or representative at their school; each school, college, or program selects 1 single discipline paper and 1 interprofessional paper and submits those to the appropriate professional association. Each association then selects up to 10 of its best papers to be forwarded to the program administrator, and a selection committee chooses 10 top entries for the single discipline category and 10 top entries for the interprofessional category. Selection is based on 1) clarity of problem statement, objectives, implementation plan, project significance, soundness of evaluation plan, and reasonableness of budget; 2) innovation in approach to health promotion or disease prevention; 3) feasibility of approach in regard to implementation of the project; and 4) potential impact on a community or target population. Final selection of winners is then made by senior staff of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Deadline for Receipt: Students must submit entries to their school by mid-February of each year; schools must forward winners to the respective professional associations by mid-March; associations forward their top entries to the program administrator in early April; semifinalist entries must be received by DHHS by the end of April. Additional Information: DHHS established this competition in 1982; since 1998, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing has administered the program on behalf of the FASHP. Other professional associations that constitute the FASHP are the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine, the American Dental Education Association, the Association of Academic Health Centers, the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges, the Association of Chiropractic Colleges, the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions, the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry, the Association of Schools of Public Health, the Association of University Programs in Health Administration, and the National League for Nursing.

Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to members of the SICA organization on the campus of a college approved by the International Chiropractors Association (ICA). Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to students who are enrolled at least half time in 1 of the following programs: allopathy, chiropractic, clinical psychology, dentistry, health administration, nuclear medical technology, nursing, occupational therapy, optometry, orthopedics, osteopathy, perfusion technology, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant, podiatry, public health, radiation therapy, ultrasonography, veterinary medicine, or other medical-related discipline. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and at least 18 years of age (or an emancipated minor, or a minor with an eligible co-signer). To qualify for the lowest origination fee, they must meet approved credit standards, have been employed continuously over the last 2 years, and have an annual income of at least $15,000. Funds Available: The stipends range from $1,000 to $5,000 per year, depending on income. No award can exceed the actual cost of attendance. After completion of their professional studies, scholarship holders are required to practice in New York for 12 months for each annual payment received. If they do not comply with the service commitment requirements, they must repay the full amount of the scholarship monies plus penalty and interest within 5 years. Duration: Up to 4 years (or 5 years for certain programs), within a 7-year period.

Eligibility Requirements: Candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and legal residents of New York for 1 year prior to application. The law requires that awards be made to eligible candidates in the following order: first priority is given to candidates who are economically disadvantaged and a minority group member historically underrepresented in the professions; second priority is given to candidates who are a minority group member historically underrepresented in the professions; and third priority is given to candidates who are enrolled in or a graduate of 1 of these state-supported opportunity programs: Search for Education, Elevation and Knowledge (SEEK) or College Discovery at City University; Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) in the State University system; or Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) at an independent college. Scholarships are available for study in the following areas at the associate degree level: dental hygiene, dietetics and nutrition, massage therapy, occupational therapy assistant, ophthalmic dispensing, physical therapy assistant, registered physician assistant, respiratory therapy, or veterinary technician; at the baccalaureate degree level: certified public accountancy, architecture, athletic trainer, dietetics and nutrition, professional engineering, interior design, landscape architecture, registered nurse, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, registered physician assistant, or veterinary technician; at the master's degree level: acupuncture, architecture, audiology, landscape architecture, midwifery, nurse practitioner, occupational therapy, physical therapy, registered physician assistant, social work, or speech language pathology; at the doctoral degree level: chiropractic, optometry, pharmacy, podiatry, psychology, or veterinary medicine; or at the J.D. level: law. Under specified conditions, certain loan recipients in qualifying disciplines may have their loans canceled through service in North Carolina. Duration: 1 year; renewable for 1 additional year for diploma, associate, certificate, and master's degree programs, for 2 additional years for baccalaureate degree programs, or for 3 additional years for doctoral programs.

Eligibility Requirements: North Carolina residents are eligible to apply for this program if they have been accepted as full-time students in an accredited associate, baccalaureate, master's, or doctoral program leading to a degree in 1 of the following areas: allied health (including audiology/communications assistant, cytotechnology, dental hygiene, diagnostic medical sonographer, imaging technologist, medical technology, nuclear medicine technologist, occupational therapy/assistant, physician assistant, physical therapy/assistant, radiation therapist, radiography, respiratory therapy, and speech language pathology); clinical psychology (Ph.D. level only); dentistry; dietetics and nutrition (graduate level only); mathematics education; medicine (including chiropractic medicine, emergency medicine, family medicine, geriatrics, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, osteopathic medicine, pediatrics, podiatry, primary care medicine, and psychiatry); nursing (including anesthetist, family nurse practitioner, nursing administration, general nursing, and midwifery); optometry; pharmacy; public health (graduate level only); science education (including biology, chemistry, communications and technologies, computer and information sciences, engineering, and physical science); social work (graduate level only); and veterinary medicine. Title of Award: Texas Outstanding Rural Scholar Recognition Program Area, Field, or Subject: Dentistry; Health care services; Medical technology; Medicine; Medicine, Chiropractic; Nursing; Nutrition; Optometry; Pharmaceutical sciences; Psychology; Radiology; Rehabilitation, Physical/Psychological Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Graduate, Undergraduate Number Awarded: Varies each year. Funds Available: The amount of the forgiveness loan award is based on the cost of attendance at the recipient's academic institution. Sponsoring communities pledge to cover half the student's educational expenses; the state covers the other half. Students must pledge to provide 1 year of work in the sponsoring community for each year of support they receive while in college. Duration: 1 year; may be renewed.

Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to Texas residents who are either high school seniors in the top quarter of their graduating class or college students who have earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Applicants must be enrolled or intend to enroll in an eligible academic institution in Texas to become a health care professional and arrange to be sponsored by an organization in 1 of the 174 nonmetropolitan counties in Texas. Eligible health care professions include medicine, dentistry, optometry, nursing, pharmacy, chiropractic, behavioral health, and allied health (rehabilitative services, radiology technician, medical laboratory technician, health systems management, and dietary and nutritional services). Eligible sponsoring organizations include local hospitals, rural health clinics, and community organizations. Funds are awarded on a competitive basis. Selection is based on academic achievements, essay content, sponsor's financial commitment, community statement of need, and overall quality of the nominee.
