Eligibility Requirements: The Envirothon is a problem-solving natural resource competition for high school students (grades 9-12 or equivalent home school ranking) in the United States and Canada. It is the largest high school environmental competition in North America. In most states and provinces, Envirothon is cosponsored by conservation district associations, local conservation districts, and cooperating state, federal, and provincial resource agencies. In the competition, teams of 5 high school students are tested on their knowledge of natural resources: soils and land use, forestry, wildlife, aquatic ecology, and a current environmental issue (recently: "Natural Resource Management in the Urban Environment"). Students visit 5 "in-the-field" test stations where they take written tests, conduct field work, make oral presentations, and respond to questions from the judges. Scores are based on preparation and presentation of a plan (60 points), application of data (80 points), quality of presentation (40 points), and compliance with required elements (20 points). The highest-scoring teams advance through local, regional, and state/provincial competitions to participate in the international contest. The Envirothon Extra Mile Award is awarded to the team that demonstrates the most spirit, cooperation, leadership, and friendship. Deadline for Receipt: Local and state/province competitions begin each year in April and continue through June. Winning teams then advance to the 5-day Canon Envirothon national finals in July or August at a site that changes annually. Additional Information: The Envirothon was started in 1979 by 3 Pennsylvania soil and water conservation districts. The first national competition was held in 1988. The Canon Envirothon is a year-long learning process that combines in-class study with hands-on field experiences. Each fair then sends 2 individuals and 1 team (up to 3 members) to compete in the ISEF in 1 of 15 categories: behavioral and social sciences, biochemistry, botany, chemistry, computer science, earth and space sciences, engineering, environmental science, gerontology, mathematics, medicine and health, microbiology, physics, team projects, and zoology. Each entry consists of a science project and a 250-word abstract that summarizes the project. Judging of individual projects is based on creative ability (30%), scientific thought or engineering goals (30%), thoroughness (15%), skill (15%), and clarity (10%). Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to high school seniors who are legal or permanent U.S. residents. They must be enrolled in a high school in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Wake and Midway Islands, or the Marianas. U.S. high school students enrolled in a Department of Defense dependents school, an accredited overseas American or international school, a foreign school as an exchange student, or a foreign school because their parent(s) live and work abroad are also eligible. Students being home-schooled qualify if they obtain the endorsement of the school district official responsible for such programs. Research projects may be submitted in mathematics and the biological and physical sciences, or involve combinations of disciplines, such as astrophysics, biochemistry, bioengineering, biology, biophysics, botany, chemistry, computer science, civil engineering, earth and atmospheric science engineering, electrical engineering, environmental sciences, fluid dynamics, genetics, geology, materials science, mathematics, mechanical engineering, nutritional science, physics, toxicology, and virology. Both individual and team projects (2 or 3 members) may be entered. All team members must meet the eligibility requirements. Team projects may include seniors, but that is not a requirement. Competition entrants must submit a detailed report on their research project, including a description of the purpose of the research, rationale for the research, pertinent scientific literature, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion. All projects must be endorsed by a sponsoring high school (except home-schooled students, who obtain their endorsement from the district or state home-school official). Each project must have a project advisor or mentor who is a member of the instructional staff or a person approved by the endorsing high school. There are 3 judging phases to the competition. An initial review panel selects outstanding research projects from 6 different regions of the country. The students submitting these projects are identified as regional semifinalists. Out of those, the highest-rated projects from each region are selected and the students who submitted them are recognized as regional finalists. For the next phase, the regional finalists are offered all-expense paid trips to the regional competition on the campus of a regional university partner, where their projects are reviewed by a panel of judges appointed by the host institution. Regional finalists are required to prepare a poster display of their research project, make an oral presentation about the research and research findings, and respond to questions from the judges. The top-rated individual and the top-rated team project in each region are selected as regional winners to represent the region in the national competition as national finalists. At that competition, the national finalists again display their projects, make oral presentations, and respond to judges' questions. At each phase, selection is based on clarity of expression, comprehensiveness, creativity, field knowledge, future work, interpretation, literature review, presentation, scientific importance, and validity. Placement SAE programs involve work or experience-only (paid or unpaid) activities, including directed laboratory, improvement, and research/experimentation experiences; examples include working at a nursery, grooming at a horse stable, developing a research program, or volunteering at a local park. Entrepreneurship SAE programs involve ownership of an agricultural production or agribusiness enterprise. In some of those areas, students compete separately for placement types and entrepreneurship types; in other areas, placement SAE programs compete with entrepreneurship SAE programs. The total number of award areas varies each year, depending on the areas offered and whether there are separate or combined placement and entrepreneurship competitions. Recently, a total of 49 award areas were offered. Students are first judged at their chapter on their SAE program, with winners advancing to the district level, then to the area level, and finally to the state level.
