To recognize and reward the outstanding problem-solving skills of teams of high school students in a natural resource competition.

Title of Award: Canon Envirothon Competition Scholarships and Prizes Area, Field, or Subject: Environmental conservation; Environmental science; Natural resources; Soil science; Wildlife conservation, management, and science Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Undergraduate Number Awarded: College scholarships are awarded to a total of 15 students (5 students on each of the 3 highest scoring teams). Funds Available: Students on the winning team at the international competition each receive $3,000 scholarships; students on the second-place team receive $2,000 scholarships; and students on the third-place team receive $1,000 scholarships. Funds must be used to pay educational expenses at a trade school, 2-year college, or 4-year college or university. For students on the fourth-through tenth-placed teams, Canon products are awarded (cameras or binoculars). Volunteer advisors coaching the 10 highest scoring teams also receive Canon products. The Envirothon Extra Mile Award is $100. Duration: The competition is held annually.

Eligibility Requirements: The Envirothon is a problem-solving natural resource competition for high school students (grades 9-12 or equivalent home school ranking) in the United States and Canada. It is the largest high school environmental competition in North America. In most states and provinces, Envirothon is cosponsored by conservation district associations, local conservation districts, and cooperating state, federal, and provincial resource agencies. In the competition, teams of 5 high school students are tested on their knowledge of natural resources: soils and land use, forestry, wildlife, aquatic ecology, and a current environmental issue (recently: "Natural Resource Management in the Urban Environment"). Students visit 5 "in-the-field" test stations where they take written tests, conduct field work, make oral presentations, and respond to questions from the judges. Scores are based on preparation and presentation of a plan (60 points), application of data (80 points), quality of presentation (40 points), and compliance with required elements (20 points). The highest-scoring teams advance through local, regional, and state/provincial competitions to participate in the international contest. The Envirothon Extra Mile Award is awarded to the team that demonstrates the most spirit, cooperation, leadership, and friendship. Deadline for Receipt: Local and state/province competitions begin each year in April and continue through June. Winning teams then advance to the 5-day Canon Envirothon national finals in July or August at a site that changes annually. Additional Information: The Envirothon was started in 1979 by 3 Pennsylvania soil and water conservation districts. The first national competition was held in 1988. The Canon Envirothon is a year-long learning process that combines in-class study with hands-on field experiences. The Envirothon Extra Mile Award is sponsored by the National Association of Conservation Districts.

Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to residents of Ohio who are 1) first-year students at a 2-year institution or 2) college juniors, college seniors, or graduate students. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and be working on a degree in 1 of the following: agricultural education, horticulture, floriculture, landscape architecture, botany, biology, agronomy, forestry, environmental conservation (including engineering and law), plant pathology, environmental concerns, city planning, wildlife science, habitat or forest systems ecology, land management, or an allied subject. They must submit a completed application form, a transcript, a completed financial aid form, a personal statement of financial need and career goals, a list of extracurricular activities, 3 letters of recommendation, and a recent photograph. Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to residents of Louisiana who are U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens, are not in default on an educational loan, have applied for state student aid, are or will enroll as a full-time student in a course of study leading to an undergraduate or graduate degree in forestry, wildlife, or marine science from a Louisiana public college or university, and have earned at least a 2.5 GPA in high school or college (if appropriate). Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to U.S. citizens enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education in the United States and working on a graduate or undergraduate degree (sophomores and juniors in the current academic year only) in environmental science, natural resource management, biology, public policy, geography, political science, or a related discipline. Applicants must submit transcripts, 3 letters of recommendation, and an essay (up to 1,500 words) describing their academic objectives and focusing on a specific issue affecting the conservation of fish, wildlife, or plant species in the United States and the research or study they propose to address the issue. Selection is based on the merits of the proposed research or study, its significance to the field of conservation, its feasibility and overall quality, the innovativeness of the proposed research or study, the student's academic achievements, and their commitment to leadership in the conservation field. Selection is based on academic potential, interest in conservation education, and demonstrated commitment to conservation. First preference is given to seniors in, or graduates of, the Greenwood Area School District. Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to undergraduate and graduate students at colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Applicants must be interested in conducting wildlife biology research that requires the use of specialized equipment manufactured by the sponsor. They must submit a brief description of their research project, a brief statement of how they intend to use the equipment to further their research, and the best times for them to use the equipment. Deadline for Receipt: November of each year. Additional Information: This program began in 1997. Grantees are required to prepay shipping costs, deposit $500 or a letter from their department chair acknowledging responsibility for equipment, and complete a rental agreement and damage waiver form.
