Guglielmo da Saliceto
Guglielmo da Saliceto
c. 1210-c. 1277
Italian physician and cleric, also known as William of Saliceto, widely regarded as the leading surgeon in Western Europe during the thirteenth century. Guglielmo practiced in Lombardy until 1270, when he took a position at the University of Bologna. He also served as city physician of Verona. In his Cyrugia (1275), he argued for a closer relationship between medicine and surgery—something that, while it seems obvious to modern people, was not clear at the time.
