To provide financial assistance to high school and college students from minority and/or disadvantaged backgrounds who are interested in studying architecture in college.
Title of Award: AIA/AAF Minority/Disadvantaged Scholarship Program Area, Field, or Subject: Architecture Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Undergraduate Number Awarded: Up to 20 each year. Funds Available: Awards range from $500 to $2,500 per year, depending upon individual need. Students must apply for supplementary funds from other sources. Duration: 9 months; may be renewed for up to 2 additional years.
Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to students from minority and/or disadvantaged backgrounds who are high school seniors, students in a community college or technical school transferring to an accredited architectural program, or college freshmen entering a professional degree program at an accredited program of architecture. Students who have completed 1 or more years of a 4-year college curriculum are not eligible. Initially, candidates must be nominated by 1 of the following organizations or persons: an individual architect or firm, a chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), a community design center, a guidance counselor or teacher, the dean or professor at an accredited school of architecture, or the director of a community or civic organization. Nominees are reviewed and eligible candidates are invited to complete an application form in which they write an essay describing the reasons they are interested in becoming an architect and provide documentation of academic excellence and financial need. Selection is based primarily on financial need. Deadline for Receipt: Nominations are due by December of each year; final applications must be submitted in January. Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to students who are in the final 2 years of a first professional degree: 1) the third or fourth year of a 5-year program for a bachelor of architecture or equivalent degree; 2) the fourth or fifth year of a 6-year program (4 + 2 or other combination) that results in a master of architecture or equivalent degree; or 3) the second or third year of a 3to 4-year program that results in a master of architecture and whose undergraduate degree is in a discipline other than architecture. All programs must be accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) or recognized by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC). Selection is based on a statement of goals, academic performance, letters of recommendation, a drawing, and financial need. Deadline for Receipt: January of each year. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.25 as undergraduates or 3.0 as graduate students. They must be a resident of 1 of the 6 New England states, although attendance at an institution within those states is not required. Preference is given to applicants who plan to work in an aspect of the nursery industry, including a business of their own, and to applicants who demonstrate financial need. Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to seniors graduating from high schools in Colorado who plan to attend a college, university, or junior college in the state. Applicants must be planning to major in accounting, architecture, biology, business, chemistry, construction management, engineering, finance, management, or other field associated with public works. They must have completed a course in trigonometry and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preference is given to applicants preparing for a career that promotes the public sector. Financial need is not considered in the selection process. Deadline for Receipt: March of each year. Additional Information: Recipients are given the name of a public works professional who works near their home and works in the area of local government, private consulting, or construction. Students must contact that professional and arrange to "shadow" them for half a day. Following completion of that assignment, they receive the scholarship funds, made payable to the college or university.
